Cocktail History

The Baby Yoda is a cocktail that was created in 2020 at The Vault, a pizza restaurant in the United Kingdom. The recipe first went viral thanks to its lime and olive garnishes, which make it look like the cute Star Wars character we now know as Grogu from The Mandalorian. The original was made using a simple mixture of vodka, kiwi syrup, and lime juice, but our version ups the complexity by swapping out the vodka for a cucumber-flavored gin and adding in Green Chartreuse.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Cucumber Gin: This is a type of a gin made with cucumbers, juniper berries, botanicals, and alcohol. We used Prairie Organic Spirits Cucumber, Mint, & Lime Gin because it has a refreshing flavor. For a mocktail version of this drink, try MONDAY Zero Alcohol Gin infused with cucumber in place of the gin.

Lime Juice: This is the liquid juice of a lime. We used freshly squeezed lime juice.

Kiwi Syrup: This is a sweetener made with kiwi juice, white sugar, gum Arabic powder, and water. We made ours at home using Alex’s sous vide recipe.

Green Chartreuse: This is a liqueur made in France with over a hundred herbs and plants, spices, sugar, and alcohol. For a mocktail version of this drink, try winter herb syrup in place of the Green Chartreuse.

Lime Slice: This is a slice of lime that has been cut into a half wheel shape.

Black Olives: This is an olive that has been harvested after it has fully ripened.

Bartending Tools

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:

Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. We used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Boston Shaker: This is used to shake ingredients. We used the Boston shaker from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Hawthorne Strainer: This is used to strain out ice and solid ingredients after the cocktail is shaken. We used the A Bar Above Hawthorne Strainer.

Paring Knife: This is used to cut ingredients. We used the OXO Good Grips 3.5 Inch Paring Knife.

Juicer: This is used to juice citrus. We used the ALEEHAI Manual Fruit Juicer.

Cocktail Pick: This is used to hold the garnish. We used one from the KingSeal Bamboo Knot Cocktail Pick Set.

Tasting Notes

Our Baby Yoda starts off with the combined aromas of kiwi, lime, cucumber, and herbs, has a slightly sweetened lime-forward flavor with sharp hints of herbs and kiwi at first, and follows with a cooling cucumber flavor, all of which chase each other down on the swallow.

Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: If you wish you recreate this little guy at home, please do yourself a favor and skip right to this version because it is absolutely incredible! And although we’re not ones for funky garnishes, they do make a difference here in not just aesthetics but taste too. The olives add a nice saltiness that works well with the herbal and fruity notes. This is the way.

Alex’s Take: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
“I’ll admit, I’m not one for putting complexity, flavor, and general tastiness on the back burner for the sake of a cute cocktail trend. When we first came across the original recipe for this drink from the first person who made it, I knew the drink could be better while still retaining its adorable flair. Taking the sour template it used and keeping the kiwi syrup, I added a touch of Green Chartreuse and used a cucumber-infused gin in place of standard vodka, and we got this delicious gem. While it’s obviously a little silly and cute, it’s no pushover when it comes to flavor!”

Kendall’s Take: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Okay, for a drink that is kitschy as hell, this is really delicious thanks to the tweaks Alex made. I agree with him; although still good enough, it would’ve been pretty boring if we hadn’t added the cucumber gin and Green Chartreuse to the template. Those two ingredients add a dazzling layer of complexity that push the recipe to five stars, in my opinion. Sure, the garnishes are whimsical, but you can’t help but smile at this nod to our little force-sensitive friend Grogu, especially when you find out how yummy the drink truly is. I will definitely make this again!”
