Cocktail History

The Blood Bag Punch is a large format cocktail that was created by Jay and Leah Hall of the Gastronom Cocktails blog. Meant to be bright red and served in food-grade blood bags at Halloween parties, the recipe pairs two tequilas with a fruity sangria zinger tea along with pineapple, passion fruit, and citrus.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Tequila Blanco: This is a spirit made with unaged agave and water. We used Piedra Azul Tequila Blanco. For a mocktail version of this drink, try Lyre’s Non-Alcoholic Agave Blanco Spirit in place of the tequila.

Pineapple Juice: This is the liquid juice of a pineapple. We used freshly squeezed pineapple juice.

Sangria Zinger Tea: This is a type of tea made with hibiscus, pineapple, blood orange, and citrus. We used Celestial Seasonings Sangria Zinger Herbal Tea.

Passion Fruit Juice: This is a juice made with passion fruit purée, sugar, and water.

Triple Sec: This is a liqueur made with bitter oranges, lemons, sugar, and alcohol. We used Cointreau because it’s one of the highest quality orange liqueurs on the market. For a mocktail version of this drink, try Lyre’s Orange Sec Non-Alcoholic Spirit in place of the orange liqueur.

Lime Juice: This is the liquid juice of a lime. We used freshly squeezed lime juice.

Jalapeño Tequila: This is a spirit made with jalapeño peppers, unaged agave, and water. We used Dulce Vida Spirits Organic Tequila Blanco infused with jalapeño peppers. For a mocktail version of this drink, try Lyre’s Non-Alcoholic Agave Blanco Spirit infused with jalapeño pepper in place of the tequila.

Passion Fruit Liqueur: This is a liqueur made with passion fruit, grapefruit, cherry, sugar, and alcohol. We used Passoã Passion Fruit Liqueur because it’s incredibly flavorful. For a mocktail version of this drink, try Liber & Co. Tropical Passion Fruit Syrup in place of the passion fruit liqueur.

Grenadine: This is a sweetener made with pomegranate juice and white sugar. We made ours at home using Alex’s stovetop recipe.

Red Food Coloring: This is a dye that adds color to foods or drinks. We used Watkins Assorted Food Coloring.

Bartending Tools

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:

Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. We used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Large Bowl: This is used to hold the ingredients. We used one from the Pyrex Mixing Bowl Set.

Bar Spoon: This is used to stir ingredients. We used the Barfly Stainless Steel Teardrop Bar Spoon.

Paring Knife: This is used to cut citrus into slices or wheels. We used the OXO Good Grips 3.5 Inch Paring Knife.

Juicer: This is used to juice citrus. We used the ALEEHAI Manual Fruit Juicer.

Tasting Notes

Our version of the Blood Bag Punch has sweet flavors including pineapple, a slight jalapeño spice, and passion fruit all with the subtle note of agave flavor on the finish with more spiciness.

Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: Although not an incredibly noteworthy as a cocktail, we had a lot of fun with the Blood Bag Punch, not only in drinking it but also in presenting it. It’s a great way to “inject” some fun into a Halloween party this year!

Alex’s Take: ⭐⭐
“While an incredibly simple drink, it’s meant to be more fun in its presentation than complex. The great thing about the blood bag idea in general is that it really doesn’t matter what’s in the cocktail, as long as it’s red and tastes delicious, and I respect this recipe for fulfilling its purpose.”

Kendall’s Take: ⭐⭐⭐
“I knew Alex was going to be peeved with me when he realized I bought the actual blood bags for this recipe. Admittedly, it was a pain in the butt to fill them and rig them up for the photo, but these would 100% wow your Halloween party guests if you have the patience to use them. As for the drink, it was exactly what you’d expect of a large-format punch—fruity and palatable. I don’t have much to say beyond that because it’s not meant to be as complex as other drinks, as Alex said, and it gets the job done there.”
