Cocktail History

The Cocoa Negroni is a Sips From Scripts original cocktail that we created as a variation of the Negroni in honor of our first National Negroni Week. It’s made by adding Angostura’s new cocoa bitters and a Terry’s Chocolate Orange garnish to the classic recipe made with equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Gin: This is the base spirit. We decided to use Prairie Organic Navy Strength Gin for its high alcohol content and its notes of lemon zest, angelica root, and blended spices.

Sweet Vermouth: This is a fortified wine that adds sweetness. We used Carpano Antica Formula Vermouth because it’s Alex’s favorite sweet vermouth, with dark notes of herbs, figs, licorice, cinnamon, and cocoa.

Campari: This is an Italian liqueur. It adds its distinct bitter yet savory flavor to the drink.

Cocoa Bitters: This is a type of spirit infused with cocoa and botanicals. They add chocolate flavor and spice to the drink for more complexity. We used Angostura Cocoa Bitters for their deep chocolate and caramel notes.

Chocolate Orange Wedge: This is one of the garnishes. We used Terry’s Chocolate Orange Wedges for more chocolate and citrus flavor.

Orange Twist: This is the other garnish. It adds fresh citrus aroma and flavor.

Tasting Notes

The Cocoa Negroni features aromas of citrus and Campari, and the initial taste is sweet at first with notes of chocolate before fading into pleasant Campari bitterness on the swallow.

Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: Kendall can’t drink any variation of a Negroni yet because she finds Campari to be too bitter for her palate, but Alex really enjoyed this version. He thought the cocoa flavors and chocolate orange add even more complexity to the drink, especially if you nibble on the garnish as you sip.
