Cocktail History

The Garden City Sling is a Sips From Scripts original cocktail we created as a variation of the Singapore Sling for Tanglin Orchid Gin with the addition of Aperol and our homemade pineapple gum syrup.

Our friends at Curiada connected us with Tanglin Gin to help share their wonderful spirits. In 2018, Tanglin became Singapore’s first gin distillery with the mission of bringing the world a spirit that would highlight the heritage, unique flavors, and aromas of Asia and the Spice Trade Route. Their Orchid Gin, which comes in this gorgeous colorful bottle, does not disappoint with its citrus nose, herbal and slightly sweet flavors, and peppery finish. Although easy to sip on its own, we wanted to create a cocktail that would really highlight the gin and its history.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Gin: This is the base spirit. We specifically created this recipe to use with Singapore’s Tanglin Orchid Gin for its bright, crisp juniper taste and notes of coriander seeds, angelica root, orris root, cassia bark, liquorice, cubeb, Amchoor, vanilla beans, and citrus.

Cherry Liqueur: This gives the drink its deep cherry flavor. When a recipe calls for Heering Cherry Liqueur, it does so because this liqueur has a very distinct taste that can’t be replicated by substitutes. You can use other cherry liqueurs if you can’t find Heering’s, but just know it won’t quite be the same.

Triple Sec: This is a citrus liqueur that adds sweet orange flavor. We used Cointreau because it’s one of the highest quality triple secs on the market.

Aperol: This is a bitter Italian apéritif. It adds notes of gentian, rhubarb, and cinchona.

Bénédictine: This is a spiced, floral liqueur. It’s made from twenty-seven different spices and herbs that gives adds the liqueurs unique taste that really can’t be replicated by using substitutes.

Pineapple Syrup: This is a sweetener that adds fruity pineapple flavor. We made ours using Alex’s sous vide recipe.

Lime Juice: This adds sour citrus flavors for balance. We prefer to use fresh citrus juice because it’s less bitter than the bottled stuff and tastes better.

Orange Wedge: This is one of the garnishes. It adds sweet orange aromas.

Cherry: This is the other garnish. We prefer Luxardo Maraschino cherries.

Tasting Notes

The Garden City Sling has a tart fruity aroma, an explosion of cherry and orange sweetness, and a bitter herbal finish from the Bénédictine and Aperol.

Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: A faithful but original way to enjoy this distinctive gin, this cocktail is a must-have for anybody craving a flavorful trip to beautiful Singapore and its unique tastes and aromas.
