Cocktail History

The Hot Peppermint Patty is a low-proof Christmas cocktail that was created by Sterling Archer, the main character from the hit animated show Archer, as a boozy take on hot cocoa. Bartenders all over the world have been trying to perfect the proportions of the drink ever since Archer rattled off the ingredients in Season 6 of the show; this version included in Winter Warmers: 60 Cosy Cocktails for Autumn & Winter by Jassy Davis uses milk as its base and pairs it with peppermint, cacao, and whipped cream.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Milk: This is the base of the drink. We prefer milk instead of water in hot chocolate because the taste is richer and more flavorful. To cut down on the calories, you can also use skim milk, which we often do.

White Peppermint Schnapps: This is a liqueur that adds cool peppermint flavor. We used DeKuyper’s, but whichever peppermint schnapps you can find will work.

Dark Crème De Cacao: This is a liqueur that adds dark cocoa notes. We used one of these made by DeKuyper.

White Crème De Menthe: This is a liqueur that adds cool peppermint flavor. We used DeKuyper’s, but whichever crème de menthe you can find will work.

Cocoa Powder: This adds the majority of the chocolate flavor. We prefer Ghirardelli’s Cocoa Powder because it’s richer and more chocolatey than most of the other hot cocoa mixes we’ve tried.

Whipped Cream: This is swirled on top for foamy texture and additional sweetness. We used Reddi-Wip from the can for easier application, but you can also make whipped cream at home using an iSi Cream Whipper.

Grated Chocolate: This adds a hint of chocolate flavor to the whipped cream topping. We used a Divine Milk Chocolate Bar we had on hand, but you can use any baking chocolate bar.

Tasting Notes

The Hot Peppermint Patty features the aroma of chocolate and whipped cream and the taste of deep chocolate with hints of peppermint.

Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: We thought this drink was simple but incredibly tasty, so much so that Kendall even asked for seconds the first time we tried it. Next time you’re in the mood to cuddle up on the couch with Christmas movies and hot cocoa, skip the boxed kind, and go straight for this incredibly decadent recipe.
