Cocktail History

The Pumpkin Spice Oaxacan Coffee is an autumn cocktail that we created as a variation of the Oaxacan Coffee. It follows the classic’s recipe of fresh-brewed coffee and mezcal topped with whipped cream, but this version replaces the Mexican brown sugar syrup with our favorite homemade pumpkin spice syrup.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Coffee: This is a beverage made from roasted coffee beans and water. We used medium roast coffee.

Mezcal: This is a spirit made in Mexico with agave, sugar, and alcohol that is aged in an underground pit lined with wood. We used Del Maguey Vida Mezcal because it has a palatable mezcal flavor with notes of ginger, cinnamon, and tangerine. For a mocktail version of this drink, try MONDAY Zero Alcohol Mezcal in place of the mezcal.

Pumpkin Spice Syrup: This is a sweetener made with pumpkin purée, pumpkin pie spice, vanilla extract, brown sugar, white sugar, and water. We made ours at home using Alex’s sous vide recipe.

Whipped Cream: This is heavy cream that has been whipped and beaten until it is light and fluffy. We used Reddi-Wip Original Dairy Whipped Topping because it offers easier application than making whipped cream at home using an iSi Cream Whipper. For a dairy-free version of this drink, try Reddi-Wip Non-Dairy Coconut Milk Whipped Topping in place of the whipped cream.

Bartending Tools

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:

Coffee Maker: This brews hot coffee. We used the Breville Precision Brewer Thermal Coffee Maker.

Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. We used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Bar Spoon: This is used to stir ingredients. We used the Barfly Stainless Steel Teardrop Bar Spoon.

Tasting Notes

The Pumpkin Spice Oaxacan Coffee has the initial flavors of sweet cream, which precede an explosion of smoky mezcal and chocolatey, nutty coffee all with subtle hints of sweetened pumpkin that come forward on the swallow to balance the rest out.

Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: While Alex appreciated this one much more than Kendall since he loves both coffee and mezcal, we agreed that the Pumpkin Spice Oaxacan Coffee is an unexpectedly delicious combination and a great way to keep warm as the temperatures drop.

Alex’s Take: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
“The traditional Oaxacan Coffee is just mezcal, coffee, and Mexican brown sugar syrup, but since we’re doing this one in the midst of autumn, we decided to use our pumpkin spice syrup. The resulting flavors are so great. The mezcal and coffee play so well together, while the pumpkin essentially lends some supporting character as a sweetener and a slight accent to the aftertaste, making this one just technically an autumn cocktail. I was definitely a fan of its smoky, earthy, vegetal flavors and would absolutely make it again.”

Kendall’s Take: ⭐⭐⭐
“I don’t think I would’ve ever thought to pair coffee with mezcal, but they worked surprisingly well in this drink. I especially liked the addition of our pumpkin spice syrup that gives it some seasonal flair, and I can’t say that I would rate it what I did if that ingredient hadn’t been included. If anything, I’d maybe increase the amount of flavored syrup a touch more to tone down the mezcal, but as is, it’s tasty too.”
