Cocktail History

The Sherry Flip is a creamy classic cocktail that was first mentioned in How To Mix Drinks by Jerry Thomas in 1887. According to cocktail historians, the flip itself is template that has been around since at least the 16th century, but they were originally made with beer, rum, sugar, egg yolk, and egg white and served hot. Over time they evolved into cold up drinks, the most famous of which is this one made with fortified wine.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Fino Sherry: This is the base spirit. It’s a type of fortified wine that is drier and has a slight almond flavor.

Simple Syrup: This is a sweetener made with sugar and water. You can buy bottled simple syrup in a store, but we made ours at home using Alex’s recipe because it tastes better fresh and is very easy to make.

Whole Egg: This adds more thickness and body. When a recipe calls for whole egg, it means the egg white and yolk. Most cocktail recipes only call for egg white, and that’s what makes flips unique.

Grated Nutmeg: This is the garnish. It’s sprinkled on top to add a hint of flavor and spiced aroma.

Tasting Notes

The Sherry Flip features nutmeg aroma, a sweet and frothy taste despite calling for a dry wine, and a full texture in the mouthfeel.

Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: In our opinion, this recipe tasted much better than it sounded! Kendall had a harder time with the psychology of drinking a whole egg since this was her first time trying it in a cocktail, but even so, we’d both make it again. And when we do, we’d probably try it with cranberry simple syrup for an added layer of flavor (and holiday spirit).
