Cocktail History

The Spring Gin Mule is a Sips From Scripts original cocktail that was created as a springtime variation of our Holiday Gin Mule and Winter Gin Mule. The recipe was made for Victoria Distillers Empress 1908 gin, a popular spirit flavored and colored bright purple with butterfly pea blossom. The botanical flavor of the spirit is complemented with a flowery lavender syrup, lime juice, and ginger beer.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Butterfly Pea Blossom Gin: This is a type of gin made with butterfly pea blossom, juniper berries, botanicals, and alcohol. We used Victoria Distillers Empress 1908 Ginbecause it has light and refreshing juniper taste, herbal black tea flavor, and beautiful purple hue. For a mocktail version of this drink, try butterfly pea blossom tea in place of the gin.

Lavender Syrup: This is a sweetener made with lavender, sugar, citric acid, and water. We used Floral Elixir Company Lavender Elixir because it has a fragrant floral flavor with blueberry undertones.

Lime Juice: This is the liquid juice of a lime. We used freshly squeezed lime juice.

Ginger Beer: This is a carbonated beverage made with ginger spice, yeast, and sugar. We used Q Mixers Ginger Beer because it has a delicious ginger flavor that is sweetened with agave syrup.

Lavender Sprig: This is the flower stem from a lavender plant.

Bartending Tools

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:

Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. We used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Boston Shaker: This is used to shake ingredients. We used the Boston shaker from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Hawthorne Strainer: This is used to strain out ice and solid ingredients after the cocktail is shaken. We used the A Bar Above Hawthorne Strainer.

Paring Knife: This is used to cut ingredients. We used the OXO Good Grips 3.5 Inch Paring Knife.

Juicer: This is used to juice citrus. We used the ALEEHAI Manual Fruit Juicer.

Tasting Notes

The Spring Gin Mule has ginger aromas, follows with a spicy-sweet taste comprised of florals and botanicals along with a hint of lime, and goes out with an aftertaste of more spicy ginger and lavender bud flavors.

Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: The beauty of the Spring Gin Mule lies in its simplicity, and we both loved the combination of this specific gin’s unique botanicals alongside a bit of floral flavor as they mingled perfectly with the light kick of the agave-sweetened ginger beer.

Alex’s Take: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Though a fairly simple riff on a Moscow Mule that we had made in the past, Kendall came up with this spec all by herself, and it was noteworthy to me as the first cocktail she’s ‘made up’ from scratch (sans the times she’s just changed an ingredient or two around). It was quite good, with sweet floral notes abound but plenty of balance in the lime juice and ginger, and its beautiful color is the icing on the cake. If you’re going to have a Mule this spring, you can do much worse than this one, and that’s coming from somebody who isn’t huge on floral flavors.”

Kendall’s Take: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“We were going to make this spring-inspired variation last year after creating both a Christmas and winter version too, but I forgot to stick it on our calendar before the summer. It’s been in the back of my mind since then, and I’m glad we finally got to find out if it’s just as good with floral notes instead of fruit and herbs. Although a bit drier and not quite as complex as the others since they used compound syrups, I still really loved the Spring Gin Mule. It’s sweet and floral and has a delicious ginger bite. Plus, its lovely purple hue is sure to wow your friends!”
