Cocktail History

The Thanksgiving Nog is a batch autumn cocktail that was created by Nick Mautone and included in his book The Artisanal Kitchen: Holiday Cocktails. It’s served warm and made on a stovetop using lots of different ingredients, including rum, cream, pumpkin, brown sugar, and various seasonal spices.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Dark Rum: This is the base spirit. We used Plantation Original Dark Rum for its spiced flavor and its ability to blend well in cocktails.

Water: This stretches the drink so the recipe makes more. We typically use filtered tap water because ours is fairly hard, but you can use unfiltered tap water or bottled spring water if preferred.

Heavy Cream: This gives the cocktail its creamy texture. We used half & half instead of heavy cream because it’s flavorful while still being lighter on the calories, but you can also use heavy cream or milk.

Pumpkin Purée: This is cooked pumpkin that has been blended into a smooth pulp. It adds pumpkin flavor and texture.

Brown Sugar: This is a sugar that is made with molasses. It adds sweetness and more dessert flavor.

Maple Syrup: This adds all of the drink’s maple flavor. We used a locally made maple syrup from the grocery store.

Vanilla Extract: This is a sweetener that adds vanilla flavor. We used Simply Organic Pure Vanilla Extract.

Pumpkin Pie Spice: This is a baking spice that adds more pumpkin flavor. We used Simply Organic Pumpkin Pie Spice, but any brand will work.

Whipped Cream: This is swirled on top for foamy texture and additional sweetness. We used Reddi-Wip from the can for easier application, but you can also make whipped cream at home using an iSi Cream Whipper.

Ground Cinnamon: This is a baking spice. It’s sprinkled on top of the whipped cream to add more cinnamon aroma and flavor.

Cinnamon Stick: This is the garnish. It adds more cinnamon aroma and flavor.

Tasting Notes

The Thanksgiving Nog features the delicious aroma of fall spices paired with the distinct tastes of pumpkin, banana from the rum, and maple, and it has a decadent sweetness from the brown sugar, vanilla, and cream.

Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: When tasting this drink for the first time, Kendall’s exact words were, “Wow, it’s like I’m drinking a pumpkin pie.” Although it’s quite high in calories, this is a delicious recipe worth indulging in around the holidays. It makes about six servings though, so be prepared to share some with a friend!
