Cocktail History
The Winter Berry Gin Fizz is a Sips From Scripts original cocktail that was created as a variation of the Raspberry Gin Fizz that was first published in The Official Downton Abbey Cocktail Book: Appropriate Libations for All Occasions by Lou Bustamante. The recipe calls for gin as its base, pairs it with tart lime, cranberry, and raspberry, and adds the effervescence of soda water to create a refreshing fruity Christmas drink.
Cocktail Ingredients
To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:
Gin: This is a spirit made with juniper berries, botanicals, and alcohol. We used Door County Distillery Gin because it has a light and refreshing juniper flavor. For a mocktail version of this drink, try MONDAY Zero Alcohol Gin in place of the gin.
Lime Juice: This is the liquid juice of a lime. We used freshly squeezed lime juice.
Cranberry Syrup: This is a sweetener made with cranberries, white sugar, citric acid, and water. We made ours at home using Alex’s sous vide recipe.
Raspberry Liqueur: This is a liqueur made with raspberries, sugar, and alcohol. We used Chambord Liqueur because it has rich notes of blackberries, blackcurrants, Cognac, vanilla, citrus peel, honey, and spices. For a mocktail version of this drink, try Monin Premium Wild Raspberry Syrup in place of the raspberry liqueur.
Soda Water: This is a type of water that has been infused with carbon dioxide gas under pressure. We used Topo Chico Sparkling Mineral Water because it’s light, essentially flavorless, and refreshing.
Cranberries: This is a small red fruit. We used fresh cranberries.
Rosemary: This is an evergreen herb. We used fresh rosemary.
Bartending Tools
To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:
Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. We used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.
Boston Shaker: This is used to shake ingredients. We used the Boston shaker from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.
Hawthorne Strainer: This is used to strain out ice and solid ingredients after the cocktail is shaken. We used the A Bar Above Hawthorne Strainer.
Paring Knife: This is used to cut ingredients. We used the OXO Good Grips 3.5 Inch Paring Knife.
Juicer: This is used to juice citrus. We used the ALEEHAI Manual Fruit Juicer.
Scissors: This is used to cut herbs. We used OXO Good Grips Multi-Purpose Kitchen Scissors.
Cocktail Pick: This is used to hold the garnish. We used one from the I-MART Stainless Steel Cocktail Pick Set.
Tasting Notes
The Winter Berry Gin Fizz features berry, gin, and rosemary aromas and an initial gin-forward taste followed by the sweet and tart flavors from the two different berries.
Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: We both loved this light and airy cocktail and highly recommend it, especially if you have lots of cranberries to use up before the Christmas season’s over.
