Cocktail History

The Adios Motherfucker, also known as the AMF, is a classic cocktail that was originally created in the United States in the 1980s but regained popularly in the 2010s. The bright blue recipe is essentially a Long Island Iced Tea that is also made with an equal-parts base of vodka, gin, rum, and tequila, but instead of triple sec and cola, it calls for blue curaçao and lemon lime soda.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Vodka: This is a spirit made with grains, vegetables or fruits, and alcohol. We used Smirnoff Vodka because it’s high quality and affordable. For a mocktail version of this drink, try STRYKK Not V*dka in place of the vodka.

Gin: This is a spirit made with juniper berries, botanicals, and alcohol. We used Gordon’s London Dry Gin because it has a classic botanical flavor. For a mocktail version of this drink, try MONDAY Zero Alcohol Gin in place of the gin.

White Rum: This is a type of rum made with molasses or sugar cane juice and a neutral spirit that is filtered and bottled right away without the aging process. We used BACARDÍ Superior White Rum because it has a soft and slightly sweet rum flavor. For a mocktail version of this drink, try Lyre’s Non-Alcoholic White Cane Spirit in place of the rum.

Tequila Blanco: This is a spirit made with unaged agave and water. We used El Jimador Tequila Silver because it has a light and palatable agave flavor with notes of grapefruit and apple. For a mocktail version of this drink, try Lyre’s Non-Alcoholic Agave Blanco Spirit in place of the tequila.

Blue Curaçao: This is a liqueur made with oranges, sugar, spices, blue food coloring, and alcohol. We used DeKuyper Blue Curaçao Liqueur because it has a potent orange flavor and bright blue color. For a mocktail version of this drink, try Monin Premium Blue Curaçao Syrup in place of the blue curaçao liqueur.

Sweet & Sour Mix: This is a sweetener made with lemon juice, lime juice, white sugar, and water. We made ours at home using Alex’s stovetop recipe.

Lemon Lime Soda: This is a carbonated soft drink made with lemon, lime, caffeine, sugar, and carbonated water. We used Zevia Lemon Lime Twist Soda.

Lemon Slice: This is a slice of lemon that has been cut into a half wheel shape.

Cherry: This is a fruit that has been soaked in rich syrup.

Bartending Tools

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:

Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. We used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Bar Spoon: This is used to stir ingredients. We used the Barfly Stainless Steel Teardrop Bar Spoon.

Paring Knife: This is used to cut ingredients. We used the OXO Good Grips 3.5 Inch Paring Knife.

Cocktail Pick: This is used to hold the garnish. We used one from the I-MART Stainless Steel Cocktail Pick Set.

Tasting Notes

The Adios Motherfucker features aromas of citrus and has a refreshing lemon-lime flavor with the botanicals of gin, spice of rum, and agave taste of the tequila peeking through in the mouth and on the swallow.

Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: We’re not big on cocktails that use a lot of blue dye, but we have to admit that the Adios Motherfucker is surprisingly sippable given its high alcohol content. That makes it pretty dangerous, so if you decide to have one of these while out on the town, make sure to drink it slowly and maybe have a glass or two of water before having another.

Alex’s Take: ⭐⭐⭐
“As this is really just a brightly colored Long Island Iced Tea, which is already a go-to drink for many, it’s not surprising that this recipe regained popularity over the last ten years. It does scream ‘1980s’ a little too much for my taste, and it’s not as complex as I prefer my craft cocktails to be. That said, I can’t deny how refreshing and palatable it is.”

Kendall’s Take: ⭐⭐⭐
“I can see why this drink is a popular pick for chain restaurants and college town bars. Provocative name aside, it’s quite tasty, and in my opinion, that’s largely because it just tastes like lemon-lime soda. Add in the blue color, and it’s inevitable that it becomes an instant crowd-pleaser wherever it’s made. I don’t think I’d make it again because there’s so much blue curaçao in it, but I’d so go for it if you’re intrigued and want to try it for yourself.”
