Cocktail History

The Harvest Run is a Sips From Scripts original cocktail that we created as an autumn variation of the Mint Julep in honor of Derby Day. In its 144 years of existence, the “Race for the Roses” had never been postponed before 2020, so we wanted to make a riff on its official drink that reflected the fall date by adding a mix of autumnal flavors—apricot brandy, crème de cassis, and our own homemade blackberry and cinnamon syrups.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Bourbon: This is the base spirit. We went with Buffalo Trace Distillery Benchmark Bourbon for its delicious whiskey spice and notes of caramel, stone fruit, tobacco, oak, and cherries.

Apricot Brandy: This is a Cognac-based liqueur that adds apricot flavor. We used Phillip’s Apricot Brandy because it’s flavorful and affordable.

Blackberry Syrup: This is a sweetener made with blackberries, sugar, and water. We made ours using Alex’s sous vide recipe.

Cinnamon Syrup: This is a sweetener made with cinnamon, sugar, and water. We made ours using Alex’s sous vide recipe.

Crème De Cassis: This is a blackcurrant liqueur. We used Mathilde Cassis Liqueur for its tart, bittersweet flavor.

Mint Leaves: These are also muddled in the glass to add fresh mint flavor.

Mint Sprig: This is one of the garnishes. It adds fresh mint aroma and flavor.

Cinnamon Sticks: This is the other garnish. It adds cinnamon aroma and flavor.

Tasting Notes

The Harvest Run features aromas of the whiskey’s spice, mint, and cinnamon and the initial taste of bourbon with notes of the stone fruit, berries, and cinnamon on the tongue followed by more spice and refreshing mint on the swallow.
