Cocktail History

The Blood Orange Sunrise is a modern cocktail that was created by Clare Liardet and was first published in her book Dry: Delicious Handcrafted Cocktails & Other Clever Concoctions. The original is made by mixing several fresh citrus juices, including pomegranate, blood orange, and lime, and pairing them with a rich honey syrup and refreshing soda water. Our version, however, adds vodka to make it boozy.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Pomegranate Juice: This is the liquid juice of a pomegranate. We used POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice.

Vodka: This is a spirit made with grains, vegetables or fruits, and alcohol. We used Smirnoff Vodka because it’s high quality and affordable. For a mocktail version of this drink, omit the vodka or try STRYKK Not V*dka in place of the vodka.

Blood Orange Juice: This is the liquid juice of a blood orange. We used freshly squeezed blood orange juice.

Lime Juice: This is the liquid juice of a lime. We used freshly squeezed lime juice.

Honey Syrup: This is a sweetener made with honey and water. We made ours at home using Alex’s simple recipe.

Soda Water: This is water that has been infused with carbon dioxide gas under pressure. It stretches the drink and adds some fizz. We used Topo Chico because it’s light, essentially flavorless, and refreshing.

Blood Orange Twist: This is the peel of a blood orange that has been twisted into a corkscrew shape.

Bartending Tools

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:

Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. We used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Boston Shaker: This is used to shake ingredients. We used the Boston shaker from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Hawthorne Strainer: This is used to strain out ice and solid ingredients after the cocktail is shaken. We used the A Bar Above Hawthorne Strainer.

Paring Knife: This is used to cut ingredients. We used the OXO Good Grips 3.5 Inch Paring Knife.

Juicer: This is used to juice citrus. We used the ALEEHAI Manual Fruit Juicer.

Peeler: This is used to remove the garnish peel from the citrus. We used the OXO Good Grips 2-Piece Peeler Set.

Tasting Notes

The Blood Orange Sunrise features strong citrus aroma and tastes of tart citrus with undertones of pomegranate and a hint of honey to sweeten it up.

Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: We both thought this cocktail was refreshing, tangy, and delicious! To be honest, we aren’t big on mocktails though, so that was why we added in vodka to make a boozier version. We’d also like to try tequila, champagne, or sake in the Blood Orange Sunrise if we made it again.
